I used my Kindle Fire for streaming Prime movies and playing some Angry Birds, but mostly as an e-reader.
The "new" Kindle Fire, the HD, is a fantastic upgrade for all of the 3 items I mentioned above. The color & crispness of the screen is readily apparent; the Angry Birds games look much better. The sound is definitively improved, both with & without earbuds.
The HDMI out port was sorely needed; this will make it really nice for watching TV in hotels and when staying at friends'/relatives' houses. It's also nice if you're watching with someone, as it will no longer require close contact hovering over the Kindle (can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on who you are huddling with!)
For reading, there seems to be less glare, faster page turns, and the new HD is very comfortable in the hand. There seems to have been some more thought put into the ergos of this new Fire. I can't comment on battery life just yet.
Carousel / menu navigation seems more intuitive and smooth, and the Fire HD seems less "buggy" and more responsive to intentional finger swipes.
Make sure you buy the Kindle PowerFast acclerated charger ... really should have been a bit more clear. Should have just been included, but I guess they really wanted to keep it under $200.
To summarize, the old Fire did everything just fine as far as I was concerned, but I was a very basic user. The improvements on the HD are readily apparent, and I think they are well worth the price of upgrading. I've already passed on my Fire, making that person really happy!
Overall 5 stars. $200 for this 7" tablet is a great bargain IMHO.
I'm giving it 5 stars to offset the useless 1 star reviews by people who have not received their kindle yet or don't plan to buy one, but 4 is the true rating. I read reviews only to find garbage ratings from other amazon members. You are not helping out the community by posting unrelated issues that do not pertain to the actual product, such as shipping time.
We have the internet at our fingertips, and yet many are completely ignorant with the previews/reviews/reports from other websites about what this tablet was made for and what its shortcomings are. It's funny people blindly pay $200 without looking into the details and expect it to do everything more expensive tablets do, then get all upset. This review is based on what I received rather than deducting points for not having things I wish it had. I knew fully what to expect when I ordered it.
My goal was an easy to use multimedia tablet for my mother, who loved the kindle I purchased her a couple years ago. I am well experienced with the Ipad 3, Kindle Fire SD, Samsung Galaxy 7.0 Version 2, Nexus 7, as well as my trusty Kindle Keyboard 3rd Gen.
